seeds to flowers to dust [Jul. 2nd, 2004|04:59 pm]
[mood | chipper]
[music |zeros]

for the first time since 1998 i find myself as the only member of the stuck-ups. it sure makes scheduling practice easy. although shows are going to be a bit difficult, the record label said since the recordings rock they do not care who is, or is not, in the band. very good news, the past few years of work will be documented on vinyl! the album is due out in less than two months and the only thing left to do is the cover. they really want this guy from the real losers to design it using a photo i supply. what do you say grave dwellers...you guys up for one last photo shoot? if not, that is cool too, i can put a big picture of myself on the cover.

a full on jam [May. 4th, 2004|06:18 pm]
[mood | excited]
[music |johnny demon and the devils - shut your mouth]

finally... we will have another practice and overall rock out session. tonight will be minus roman, our new drummer, he is in LA at coachella. and since rachel said she does not like to practice without a drummer she enlisted an old school dude who was in decline of western civilization (part I) named christopher squire. i am sure he has stories...alice bag & darby crashYEAAA. or any other LA punkers would be cool to hear about. she just called and i have to pick him up at the garage and take him to guitar center where he bought 800 bucks worth of drum shit. he did not spend 800 bucks to jam for 3 hours, did he? maybe he can be my other band...ho.

other noteworthy stuck-UPS news: i am trying to convince the people who are putting out our record to make it a 12” - 45. they want a photo of us on the cover but i hate being told what to do so maybe we won't. at least i got them to do vinyl and not just a dumb ole' CD. but we are planning a photo shoot with victoria renard at the graveyard so maybe - so so goth.

rock 'n' roll chronicles [Apr. 23rd, 2004|04:00 pm]
[mood | thirsty]
[music |the sonics boom]

another sad day in the history of the stuck-ups as a change has come upon us. nora has quit the band. things are fine, things are good, no need to freak she will still be playing music just different stuff right now. i am sure if you ask nicely she will tell you all about it. i was seriously considering a wrap but for some damn reason the people will not let the stuck-ups die. soooooo the new stuck-ups consist of roman on drums, rachel on bass and of course, the never changing me on guitar. last night at practice we wrote four or five new songs and that was definitely promising. obviously the sound will be totally different without keys and even though we have already had a few offers we need to get some solid ground beneath us before we try anyone out. keep yer eyes peeled for a reemergence in late summer.

Later days... [Dec. 26th, 2003|12:39 pm]
[music |unreleased Stuck-Ups tunes]

As Tiff said, Saturday, December 13th, was my last show with The Stuck-Ups. It went GREAT! As sad as it was to be playing my last show, things couldn’t have gone better.

We made the night a tribute to Brian Foss, who we consider to be the nicest, coolest, most professional booker in the Puget Sound area. He’s booked the band since I joined and he’s aces! Marci, Allison, Tiffany and I made three different button styles for the occasion, which we handed out secretly through the night. Brian started seeing them on people and was pleasantly surprised. The buttons almost didn’t get made but Shelly Gloryhole stepped in and saved the day. Shout out to Shelly!

Thanks to The Glamour Pets for playing a crazy Glamour Pets kinda’ set! The Stuck-Ups were playin’ quite a few shows with them and they’re definitely picking up steam.

Thanks to The Triggers for being there for my last. I was giddy watching Candy, Justin, Tarika and Jonny tear it up that night. My fourth show with The Stuck-Ups was with the Triggers, The Hunches and The Nearly Deads July 6, 2001 at The Medicine Hat in Portland! Portland rockers gabba hey! I LOVE THE TRIGGERS!

Our set was FUN! Meredith and I had free reign to play what we wanted and we took it. We played “Good Girl” and “Kill Yourself” from the first album. We also did “Nightmare,” “Johnny,” “Teenage Zombie Knockout” and “Goin’ Under” from Human Doll Express. Someone who’s got a set list from the show should post it here! Nora? Tiff? Mer? Tiffany wrote a poem for Brian (which she should post here for posterity) and read it half way through. We did two covers that ruled. The first was “You Make Me Die” by Thee Billy Childish. Tiff played drums, Nora played bass and sang backing vocals, Meredith played keyboard and I played guitar and sang lead. That was WEIRD but cool and went off pretty well. We also recapped our Devolution Halloween by pulling Owen on stage with us and doing “Freedom Of Choice.” During the grand finale, Mer kept smackin’ me with the headstock on her bass so I went ahead and knocked over my drum kit. Cymbals beat mic cords, if ya’ know what I mean, so there go some of the vocals. Nora’s AC adaptor caught an edge, too. Pete Glamour Pet, Candy Trigger and some other folks set my drum kit back up and we launched into some drunken, unrehearsed bits and pieces of old favorites. Then it was over.

Afterwards, Tiff, Marci, Jon Vermont, Allison and I went to Owen’s for after hours hangout party fun. We listened to cool tunes and got still more drunk. Ouch!

Here’s where I thank everyone. Thanks to everyone who came to our shows. Without you, we’d have played to empty rooms and made no money! Thanks to all the bands we’ve played with, whether I liked you or not. Thanks to the writers who wrote about us, the DJs who played us on air, the bookers who booked us, the promoters who promoted us. Thanks to the organizations that made us part of their events! Thanks to Sympathy For The Record Industry, Jonny Cat Records and Dirtnap Records, all of whom released our stuff! Thanks to Johnny Sangster (Egg!) and Mike Epting for recording us! Thanks to our detractors; you made us stronger! Special thanks to that dipshit in Chicago and the dipshit sound guy at a certain London club. Extra special thanks to the dipshit bartender at the same club. Just for the record, I am not in The Electric Shocks OR The Wednesdays and I DID NOT get my drink tickets! Asshole! Thanks to my folks for making it to a show before it was all over. Thanks to Aaron Volosin for making it possible for me to get a drum kit in the first place! No thanks to people who borrowed drum keys permanently. Thanks to former Stuck-Ups, one and all! Thanks to Michael Lucas for having us! Special thanks to Holly Morgan for being none other than Holly Morgan! Cap’n Morgan, ahoy! Thanks to Delia Dansette for going so far above and beyond the call of duty it’s ridiculous! Thanks to everyone who said I was a good drummer and thanks to Bill Ward, Mitch Mitchell, Keith Moon, Robo and Chuck Biscuits for showing me how it’s done! Thanks to Ralph Rosenberry and Garrett Shavlik for showing me how it’s done in person!

Biggest thanks to Tiffany, Meredith and Nora for everything and everything else. I love you guys! Cheers!

Sign of the Times [Dec. 17th, 2003|05:02 pm]
[mood | drunk]
[music |AC/DC Back in Black]

I am drunk at work. And so are a lot of people. Right now they are all gawking at the sunset. OOHHHHH so pretty. We started drinking at the Holiday Party around 11am and have been consuming syrah and scotch (sorry Justin, you left too early to get any hard stuff) since then.

So, last Saturday night the Stuck-Ups went out with a bang! A gang bang you ask? Yes, indeed. A hell of a gang, there were so many of our friends in attendance, new and old it was just a really awesome turnout and super warm vibe, despite Candy from the Triggers outwardly hating on our Holiday Party talk and our fake Christmas tree. It was Justin and Meredith’s last show and that had my heart all swollen from the get go. I kept squeezing Justin like I would never see him again or something. Yah, we work 50 feet from each other, live like 6 blocks apart and will continue to be totally tight but, I wanted to make sure Justin and Meredith knew just how much I love them. Justin told me today we did 91 shows together. We have clocked tens of thousands of miles together touring the world. We have played shows in 8 countries. We have so many awesome memories together and tons of photos, a little video footage, 2 -7”s and a full length record to prove it.

Our graveyard will have two new shining faces that will never be forgotten. R.I.P. HDE.

A special thanx to the Glamour Pets & Triggers for blasting out our eardrums and to DJ Owenlotz for cranking out the metal, the soul, the rock and the roll. As well as Amy for taking these rad photos. http://home.comcast.net/~ahalligan/stuckups12-13-03/index.htm
And to Marci, Allison and Shelly for making the I love Brian buttons happen.

You guys Rule!!!!!!

Love,
Tiffy

Total Bomb [Dec. 8th, 2003|03:08 pm]
Man, our set on Friday sounded like sheeet! I wish we could blame it on the Hideaway and their lack of an adequate sound system but, we cannot. Saturday night the Groovie Ghoulies sounded great in the very same room with the very same sound system. Okay—we admit it WE WERE DRUNK!! Justin was the only half sober one which is ironic because he is usually the one who gets drunk. We never all get so wasted we fuck up EVERY song and that is what we did. While there is something positive to be said about this performance it is humbling we chose a public forum to display such audacious behavior.

With that said I had a total blast even though our set was a total bomb.

Thanx to all of our friends for coming out and to the Glamour Pets, Clorox Girls and New Fangs for playing (and enduring.)

Warm Leatherette [Dec. 5th, 2003|02:52 pm]
[mood | anxious]

The benefit for Gus last night was super fun. I don't know Gus but I met a lot of people who do. According to Justin the funds raised may hit 600 bucks with the kick down from the bar. I know of two more benefits for Gus in Seattle, one is with the Makers and the other is with the Gloryholes on New Years Eve. I am sure both of these shows will rake in the bucks. It was also cool to meet and hang with the dudes from Alta May and GasHuffer – very nice people.

Don't miss the biggest-coolest-newest-gig happening tonight at the Hideaway. I am totally excited for this show and it is the second to last chance to see Meredith and Justin play with The Stuck-Ups. Come dance with us damn it!

Three More Chances [Dec. 3rd, 2003|04:38 pm]
[mood | jubilant]

That is IT! The Stuck-Ups will take the stage only 3 more times in the next 10 days and that is all she wrote for The Stuck-Ups as we know them today.

Tomorrow we are playing the FUNHOUSE for Gus' Benefit.

Friday is the HIDEAWAY with the Clorox Girls(we still need an opening band for this show so, if anyone wants to play let us know.)

Our very last gig will be a Holiday Dance Party and Tribute to Brian Foss Saturday, December 13th at the FUNHOUSE with the Triggers, Glamour Pets, Midriffs and DJ Owenlotz.

We plan on causing quite a ruckus at all three events - stuff you will not want to miss.

We will miss you Justin and Meredith!!!

Ahhh Tacoma. [Aug. 30th, 2003|01:00 pm]
[music |Elvis Costello...sorry Justin.]

The Stuck-Ups ventured down to Tacoma on August 16th. We played at Hells Kitchen. It was ok. The show was promoted as a Women in Punk night, ladies get in free thang. There was a good turn out overall, but more dudes than chicks. We noticed that a group of guys kept bending over to look up Heather from The Rotten Apple's skirt everytime that she bent over while setting up her drums. Thats how the whole night felt. Weird. The crowd was low key, almost boring. The coolest thing was when Dale from Girl Trouble asked me about my bass. I was happy to tell him all about it. Yes, I am obsessed with the 1960's Hagstroms right now. Oh yeah and it was cool to talk to Dale too.

After the show we went to a party where The Mexican Blackbirds had played earlier. V.A.L.I.S. was playing. After they were done my bandmates attacked them with the intention of playing a set. I snuck out the front, thinking that if they could not find me it would not happen. The drummer from V.A.L.I.S. came out mumbling about being attacked by the "striped shirts" and that they were going to play a set. He donned a striped shirt to do battle and cracked a beer. I waited, thinking that they'd come out and drag me back in. That didn't happen so I meandered back into the party to play.

Corey from The Mexican Blackbirds took a bunch of photos of us playing )

Teenage Depression interview [Aug. 16th, 2003|10:11 am]
[mood | tired]
[music |The Screamers]

For those of you that are not lucky enough to have been able to pick up a copy of Teenage Depression out of Calgary (Canada), here is the full un-edited text of our interview.

OK, let's talk about the start of The Stuck-Ups.
You guys started, like, 5 years ago as an all-girl
band. You put out a self-released single before
hooking up with Sympathy. Who played on the first
single? How many were pressed? Are they still
available?

Justin- On the first Stuck-Ups single, Tiffany played
guitar and sang lead vocals, Julie played drums and
Jasmine played bass. I think Julie and Jasmine sang
backing vocals, as well. There were about a thousand
pressed. It is available and you can order them
directly from us through the website or by writing to
us. Incidentally, that first single is the only place
you can get the song “Beat The Meat.”

What's the current line-up of the band?

Meredith- Tiffany does the lead vocals and guitar. I play bass. Justin plays drums. Nora plays Casio. We all do, with the exception of Tiffany of course, backing vocals.

Your first album for Sympathy was produced by
Billy Childish.how'd you
hook up with him? Was the album done in Seattle or
England?

Meredith- Julie and Billy hooked up outside of The Breakroom and fell in looooove. They decided to get married and Julie planned on moving to the UK. Billy was here in Seattle for his and Julie’s wedding and The Stuck-Ups recorded around that time in one of our lovely lets record everything in one day sessions and Billy helped out quite a bit. Tiffany and Billy wrote a few songs together while in the studio- that certainly helped the raw feel to the 1st record.

There's a bit of a change in the sound of the band from the first album to the second. What would you say is the difference between the two albums?

Tiffany- On the first one it was me, Jasmine and Julie. We were totally raw, learning our instruments, equipment and how to write songs. I was the only one who had been in a band before and even then played drums. On the second album we introduced the keyboard and three new members. It was me, Meredith, Justin and Bre and all of the new Stuck-Ups were seasoned, talented musicians who had been in bands before. Except maybe Bre I think this was her first band. So that in and of itself is enough to totally change the sound. Dig?

How has Sympathy treated you guys? I've known a lot
of people who have recorded for John, and I've heard a
lot of conflicting reports. Most people have no
complaints about the great job the label does on
actually putting out great records, and making 'em
look attractive. It's the fact that the label seems to
push a couple of "Key" bands, and the rest don't get
much focus at all.

Justin- Sympathy has been great. The number one bonus to
being on Sympathy, obviously, is being on Sympathy.
It’s cool. It means something. Like you said, no
one can argue that Sympathy puts out great records.

Long Gone John came to our show in L.A. and rocked
out with us. He’s been friendly to us, treated us
with respect and dignity, put out two killer albums
for us, advertised those albums in internationally
distributed publications and said nice things about us
to the people. That’s a lot, in my book.

As far as the label pushing some bands and not
others, what do you expect? We’re talking one
independent label with a handful of people running it
on limited time and money. Sympathy obviously can’t
push all the bands currently active whom they’ve
released product for. Not even a major label could do
that.

I think bands need to worry less about what a label
is or isn’t going to do for them and more about what
they can do for themselves. There are two music
industries, in my opinion. One industry is all about
units sold, the other is about music. That’s the
simplest way to put it. The MTV, Rolling Stone, major
label music industry is a business, where money is
loaned to you based on your projected income. How is
that appealing? What’s that got to do with music?

Our relationship with Sympathy has made it possible
for us to release two albums and go on two tours.
Maybe we could have done it without them but never as
well or in such a short time. More importantly, we
didn’t have to do it on our own because Sympathy was
there for us.

You guys just have a track on the recent "Dirtnap
across the northwest" comp, and you were talking about a couple 7"
projects.have either of those 7"'s seen the light of day? Any other releases
planned for the near future?

Meredith- Johnny Cat Records out of Portland, Oregon released a 7” record for us recently. It has the songs Last Chance/Out of Control. We have another 7” split single with The High Beams (also from Seattle) coming out on Dirtnap Records but it has had a series of delays due to one reason or another. We hope that will be out in the next month or so.

Currently we are working on writing and recording a new record. We’ve recorded a few tracks already and we are planning another visit to the studio soon. At this time we don’t know who is going to put it out or when. We DO know that this time we’re going to have vinyl, even if we have the split the release between labels.

You guys have a West Coast tour planned for late
spring/early summer?
Where will this take you.and when exactly is it
happening?

Meredith- We’re planning on going down the coat, but nothing is definite. We’re looking at doing it around the 2nd to last weekend of May (Memorial Day for those of us in the damn States). We finally got a real van- so no more station wagon shows or renting minivans for us. Yow! Who knows what can happen? Driving around in the van and crime solving, that’s what!

You seem to play quite a lot around Seattle, and you've made it down the west coast before. And even over to the UK. Any other tour plans for this summer? No Canadian dates, huh?

Tiffany- Yes, we have a Candian date, March 22nd at the Picadilly in Vancouver. We are currently planning a mini tour to the bay area in May. Our bigger plans include an East Coast/Mid-West tour this fall and Japan may be on the horizon for the wave of our third album.

There seems to be quite a good scene in the
Northwest right now with tons of great bands and
labels doing stuff in Seattle, Portland, etc. Of
course, I live 12+ hours away by car, so what do I
know? How are things REALLY for music in the Northwest
US? Do you find there really are a lot more good bands
right now, or is it the same as it's always been?

Justin- There are certainly a lot of bands in the
northwest, but I don’t know how many of them are
“great.” What makes a band great? How do you
define greatness?

There are a lot more people in Seattle who moved
here because of the extreme, overblown attention
Seattle received in the mainstream, international
media in the 90’s or because of the intense computer
boom in the area in the same decade. What do you
think happens when these people, people raised on
mainstream culture, start or join bands?

I think that most of the bands in the northwest are
extremely derivative. I’d say that’s the key
difference between the northwest now and fifteen years
ago. Too many bands are too easily contented with
sounding like their heroes. There are too many bands
in the area that sound just like The Dead Boys or The
New York Dolls or that whole camp. There are too many
bands around here playing “new wave.” What is new
wave? Claude Bessey said it best when he said, “New
wave does not exist.” I guess, though, that these
derivative bands have to exist so we know the
originals when we hear them.

Having said that, I do think there are a lot of
great bands in the northwest but no more or less than
anywhere else.

Ok. the "Human Doll Express" album is still relatively new. Less than half a year old, are you guys still promoting the hell out of that album, or are you ready to record a new one? When can we expect a new full-length, and WHAT should we expect?

Tiffany- We are already in the process writing and recording our third album. It’s like nothing we’ve ever done before. For the most part everybody is writing and this is creating a forceful sound. I think it is tough as hell, dark, sort of scary and some our best work yet.

Anything else we should look out for from the fine folks in The Stuck-Ups???

Meredith- More of everything. More hairspray. More fishnets. More Casios. More fuzz. More life. More SEX! More black eyemakeup. More fun!

Bullshit [Jul. 13th, 2003|04:11 pm]
So today I was walking around Capitol Hill doing various errands. This is my hood, right? Right? On my way home I passed the Capitol Hill Block Party. Having already gone yesterday and seen a bunch of bands I'm not really interested in having a go again...but Zeke is playing. So I hop up on the rock wall on the corner of the park. I still can't see anything but the top of Mark's head, but that's good enough for me.

After a while some security guys come along to hassle me and any one else who is on the walls around me. He tries to be real reasonable but I say NO, I am not getting down. I am NOT in the Block Party. I am in a public park. To boot I tell him if he touches me I will sue. They are still hassling us when a girl runs over and yells at them because they are hassling me when there is a knock down bloody fight just a few feet away.

After they resolve that one lone guy comes back and just keeps talking at me. He says it will get real ugly if I don't get down. I tell him I will sue if he touches me. He keeps neeping at me, I ignore him. Its loud and I am kind of deaf so it was easy. He just does not go away so I get sick of it an leave. Oh yeah, they win. What a victory.

I cannot believe that the organizers believe that it is ok to hassle people that are not in the block party and on PUBLIC property. Just for standing there. But I bet they do. Fuckers.

What gives? [Jun. 26th, 2003|12:09 pm]
[mood | amused]
[music |None whatsoever.]

This incredibly intelligent, insightful, well thought out post recently appeared on our website message board:

"dont you feel guilty riding on the spit's coattails?
i mean you like to fuck guys in all kinds of bands.
sleeping your way to the top tif?
a big fan in portland..."

The Stuck-Ups have a history of receiving postings to our message board from supposed Spits fans, generally talking shit about the Stuck-Ups. At first, I think we were irritated by it, sort of like when a fly decides to leave off the shit and come buzz around your head. These days, it's just highly amusing to note that several fans of The Spits feel threatened by a bunch of girls.

Most of these posts have the following in common:

*INCREDIBLY poor spelling and grammar, run on sentences and limited vocabulary. A note to future Stuck-Ups detractors: If you write ignorantly, you will be seen as ignorant. Period. I'm sorry, screw that politically correct bullshit, if you can't write, you end up looking like an idiot. Sorry about your luck.

*References to using The Spits to further our career. What career? Did you hear grown ups talking about a career and thought you'd use big people talk? Please. The Stuck-Ups don't have a "career." The Spits don't have coattails to ride. They cut 'em off so they could strangle spineless pseudopunks like you. I know The Spits. I'm a Spits fan. Those guys have come to our shows, hung out at our houses, gotten drunk with us, etc. If that's riding their coattails, then you're right. But, since it's not, then you must be a complete idiot.

*Complete and total cowardice. Posting insults and threats anonymously makes you a SPINELESS WASTE OF SKIN. No one ever comes up to our faces and says this shit. Cowards. Chicken shits. Yellow bastards.

*Insinuations that Tiffany is a slut. Listen, gents, we all know she's hot, we all know she's talented and we all know none of you unoriginal, inbred, poseur, shit for brains losers will ever have a chance in hell of hooking up with her. So, instead, you insult her. See how that works? See how transparent your no brain, tiny dick little game is? Plus, watch what you say about Tiff or Erin and Sean Spits might kill you.

People read these posts and LAUGH at these assholes. It's too funny. Love us or hate us, we're still The Stuck-Ups and you're still stupid. Have a nice life.
